The Journey from a Wedding Dress

Since my previous article was on the raw material side of circular fashion, I want to introduce another circular design practice—upcycling and reusing. The materials are repurposed from gently used clothing items to create another extraordinary piece in this design practice. This concept uses practical design to eliminate waste by giving a new life cycle to something that would otherwise be thrown away.

With lots of guidance and encouragement, I participated in my first fashion show hosted by BE SEEN, an arts-based campaign to increase civic engagement among Asian-American communities in Wichita, Kansas. Last year’s fashion show was hosted in May of 2021, and it was a fantastic way to bring Wichita’s creatives together.

The sheer mesh fabric over the silk skirt was initially underneath the multi-layered wedding dress, but I deconstructed it and placed it on top to accent the silk skirt.
